Is It Better for A Child To Use A Manual Toothbrush or an Electric One?
Posted on 8/10/2020 by SRD Russellville
Tiny teeth and gums need special care. It is very important to introduce oral hygiene to children at an early age, but even more important to provide them with the right tools. A big decision to make when it comes to these tools is to give your child a manual or electric toothbrush.
Manual Toothbrushes
Believe it or not, a manual toothbrush might do a better job of cleaning than an electric one. Your child will have to put forth a little more effort, but they can brush several teeth at once. Manual brushes are lighter weight, quieter, create less of a foreign sensation, and are less expensive. They are also very good starter toothbrushes.
Electric Toothbrushes
If your little one is more patient than squirmy, you might want to consider an electric toothbrush. While they mainly clean one tooth at a time, they do a great job of cleaning, especially brushes with circular heads. Another plus of electronic brushes is several of them light up and play music and/or make other sounds. This turns brushing into an adventure rather than a mundane task. If you are thinking about switching your tot to an electronic brush, and you use one yourself, show it to your child and demonstrate how to use it. You might want to put a part of the active brush against his/her hand to see how they react to the sensation and make a decision from there.
No matter what brush you choose, make sure it is approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). Look for toothbrushes designed for children with small heads and soft bristles. You want a brush that will fit easily in little hands and most importantly, is comfortable for them to use. Since this is an item you definitely want your child to use, let them choose their own so he/she will enjoy brushing. For more information, call our office and let us help you with the decision.
