How Long You Must Wait After Eating to Brush Your Teeth

Your parents care by reminding you to keep your teeth clean and promote oral health. The only thing that remains unclear from this parental concern is how long you must wait after eating to brush your teeth. Let us find out together.

Brush Immediately After Eating Foods Rich in Sugar and Carbohydrates

Some foods and drinks, especially those rich in sugars and carbohydrates, immediately create bacteria in your mouth twenty minutes after eating. If you brush your teeth immediately after eating such foods, you will eliminate these bacteria before they attack your tooth enamel.

Wait 30 Minutes After eating Acidic Foods

However, if you eat acidic foods, you must wait a little longer before you can brush your teeth. Suhail Mohiuddin, a Chicago-based scientist, revealed that your mouth will be very acidic after eating food containing acids. When your mouth is acidic, you cannot brush your teeth until the acidity reduces.

Brushing your teeth essentially means preventing acids from destroying your teeth. However, acids also leave your tooth enamel soft and vulnerable. The enamel is the hard outer covering that protects the tooth from erosion and decay. Brushing your teeth when the tooth enamel is still soft might mean scraping off the enamel before it can harden itself.

Most dentists will tell you to wait 30 minutes after eating acidic foods or drinks before brushing your teeth. After thirty minutes, your mouth will have returned to its alkaline state, and your enamel will be hard enough to withstand hard brushing.

Brushing your teeth before bed removes any accumulated food particles during the day to keep your mouth clean for the entire night. The main reason for brushing teeth is to remove food particles that can cause acidic attacks, and brushing also ensures that your mouth is plaque-free.

Pay attention to the recommended time - you must wait before you brush your teeth after eating. If your diet is sugary and full of carbohydrates, you must brush immediately before bacteria start attacking your teeth. However, you must wait 30 minutes before brushing if your diet comprises acidic foods.
