Can the Color of Your Tongue Signal Dental Issues?
Posted on 6/3/2024 by SRD Tuscumbia
Your tongue most likely looks like the tongues of everyone else: a healthy pink color. However, there may be times when your tongue does not look as healthy and pink as usual. Did you know that your tongue can change color due to issues in your mouth? Here is a guideline for some of the issues a colored tongue can indicate.
My Tongue Is Not the Right Color!
Here are some explanations for your tongue color and what you should do next. Keep in mind that a normal tongue color is usually pink, sometimes with a thin, white coating that covers it.
My Tongue Is Black
People with black and furry tongues have too much keratin in their mouths. Keratin is a natural substance your body makes. You may be having a buildup of keratin because of medication or because you are not brushing and flossing as often as you should. Sometimes, tobacco use and radiation therapy for cancer can turn your tongue black as well. You will want to make an appointment with our dentist to check your teeth and gums for infection.
My Tongue Is Very White
If you have a white tongue, the most likely culprit is a fungal disease called thrush. Sometimes, people develop thrush when they take steroids or antibiotics. Luckily, there is medication you can take to get rid of the thrush and return your turn back to its healthy pink hue.
My Tongue Is Purple
People with purple tongues may be experiencing a heart condition, or they may have a specific disease called Kawasaki Syndrome. If your tongue is purple, you will want to schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
My Tongue Is Red
If your tongue is red, you may have a vitamin deficiency, specifically the B vitamin group. You may also be having a reaction to medication. Also, red tongues can signify an allergic reaction to food. Our dentist will need to have a look at your tongue and ask you some questions.
