Can I Get By Without Flossing?

Posted on 7/15/2024 by SRD Muscle Shoals
Blue tooth brush with paste, floss, and mouth washVery few people like to floss their teeth. Flossing can be messy and time-consuming, and adults are always so busy with work, family, and friends that they do not have too much time to spare. While flossing can be boring and monotonous, it is necessary if you want to have healthy teeth and gums throughout your adult life. Here is some information about why flossing is so important.

Flossing Helps Prevent Periodontal Disease and Caries

If you do not like to floss, there are a couple of reasons flossing is important. First, flossing is the most important way you can keep your gums free from gum disease. When you floss your gums, you are ensuring that trapped food and plaque between your teeth are washed away. Flossing also helps the blood circulation of your gums, which increases the chances they stay healthy. This is especially important if you use tobacco because tobacco constricts blood vessels and slows blood flow. Tobacco usage also slows down your healing time, increasing the likelihood of gum disease.

When you have gum disease, you risk complications from the gum disease, especially when you have moderate or severe gum disease. Gum disease can cause gum infections, make any cavities worse, and create new infections in other areas of your body, such as your jawbone and heart valves. If your gum disease is severe, your gum tissue begins to dissolve, and you can lose teeth as well.

Tips for Effective Flossing

If you really hate to floss, we have a few suggestions. First, if you hate flossing, you do not have to use traditional dental floss. Instead, you have a couple of options. You may want to try flossers instead. Flossers use a small bit of string attached to a handle that you can move in between your teeth. Many adults find flossers easier to manage than simple string floss. You may also want to try water flossers, which look similar to electric toothbrushes, but they use jets of water rather than string.
