Sleeping Positions to Minimize Apnea

Posted on 9/21/2020 by SRD Tuscumbia
Sleeping Positions to Minimize ApneaWhen you have sleep apnea, a lot of factors come into play that can all determine how much affect your apnea has on your sleep. Your blood pressure, your weight, your alcohol intake, your exercise, and even your sleeping position make a difference when it comes to how many episodes of apnea you have each night. If you are struggling with sleep apnea, then it is best that you know how to sleep to minimize your nightly episodes. Here are a few tips to make that a bit easier.

How to Sleep Right to Breathe Better

Sleeping on your back is all but forbidden when you have sleep apnea. This is because it almost always causes you to struggle more when you sleep. Sleeping on your stomach is often uncomfortable for many adults, and then, not used. However, sleeping on your side can benefit your sleep patterns significantly.

One of the major causes of sleep apnea is that your tongue or throat tissue falls backwards into the airway, causing a blockage. If you are lying on your side, this is far less likely to happen. Plus, even if it does, it will only obstruct part of the airway instead of the entire thing. This allows your apnea to be less dangerous, and allows you to get better sleep.

For more information on things that you can do to sleep better with sleep apnea, you should go in and see your dentist. He or she may be able to give you some other treatment options, such as a dental appliance that can keep your jaw in line to keep your tongue out of your airway. That way, even if you did roll on to your back, you didn't increase the likeliness that you would suffer from more episodes at that time.
