Ways of Overcoming Problems with Arthritis to Keep Your Teeth Clean

Posted on 12/7/2020 by SRD Tuscumbia
Ways of Overcoming Problems with Arthritis to Keep Your Teeth CleanArthritis causes inflammation of the joints that can lead to problems with dental care. The condition can affect the joints in the hands and wrists, which makes it difficult to use a toothbrush. To overcome this problem, you have some options available to you.

Caring for Your Teeth When You Have Arthritis

If your arthritis pain interferes with taking care of your teeth, you may need to stop using a manual toothbrush and opt for an automatic toothbrush and water flosser instead. Both devices will keep you from using the wrist joints so you can clean your gums and teeth more easily. The brush head on an automatic brush moves and cleans the teeth, and has been found, in some studies, to be more effective than using a manual brush. A water flosser dispenses water in pulses, and rinses away bacteria and plaque at the gum line and between the teeth. If you cannot use regular floss, try using a floss stick. While regular flossing is usually better, combining the use of the floss stock with the water flosser will go a long way in helping you clean your teeth.

Do Not Stand at the Sink

If your arthritis pain makes it difficult to stand at the sink to brush, sit down there. Place your elbow on the side of the sink and steady it so you will not feel as much pain when using your toothbrush or flosser. When brushing your teeth with your automatic toothbrush, make sure you brush at least 2 minutes. To ensure you put in the required time, play a favorite song while you brush that is about 2 to 3 minutes long. Do not stop brushing until the song ends.

If you have mobility problems because of arthritis, we are here to help. Give us a call if you have any concerns about at-home dental care and you are arthritic.
