Reasons Teeth May Be Sore When You Wake Up Each Day
Posted on 2/22/2021 by SRD Tuscumbia
We have patients who complain about tooth soreness upon awakening. Does this happen to you? If so, you need to know why this may be occurring.
Why Do My Teeth Feel Sore Whenever I Get Up?
To determine the reason for sore teeth, it helps to know if you sleep with your mouth opened or closed. If you sleep with your mouth open, you can experience sore teeth as the result of a dry mouth. While your body will produce less saliva when you sleep, the mouth still needs saliva to neutralize acid levels and to prevent the formation of cavities. However, if you sleep open-mouthed, your breathing will dry up the saliva, leaving your teeth, mouth, and throat susceptible to soreness and pain. Therefore, if your mouth is dried out, your teeth will ache and your throat will feel scratchy until you brush and rinse with some water. As the day progresses, you won't notice the same level of tooth soreness that you experienced when waking.
What Else Can Cause Tooth Soreness?
If you sleep closed-mouthed, or don't regularly sleep with an open mouth, the soreness you experience on waking may be related to gum disease, decay, bruxism, or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD). Actually, TMJD is often the byproduct of bruxism, or the clenching and grinding of the teeth while asleep. This stress-related disorder or disturbance reflex can cause jaw joint and tooth pain issues. Therefore, tooth soreness can happen for one of several reasons. If you develop any oral sensitivity or pain, it can be due to a larger medical or dental issue. That is why you need to make appointments every 6 months to have us check your gums and teeth.
