Reasons to Wait 30 Minutes After Eating to Brush

Posted on 8/9/2021 by SRD Tuscumbia
Reasons to Wait 30 Minutes After Eating to BrushOur bodies are incredibly complex. In fact, you have salivary glands in your lips, inside your cheeks, and throughout your mouth and throat. These glands produce saliva, which benefits our body in several ways.

Benefits of Saliva

Saliva is the clear liquid in your mouth made mostly of water. It is highly functional and an essential part of your overall health. This slippery substance produced by the salivary glands helps to digest our food and keep our teeth strong. Saliva keeps your mouth healthy by washing away food and debris from your gums and teeth. Saliva also provides other tooth decay fighting substances to your mouth. These substances help prevent cavities and other infections and provide nutrients for the surface of your teeth. Saliva keeps your enamel strong.

Saliva starts the digestive process in our mouth. It acts like a solvent and help to dissolve our food; saliva also helps with chewing and swallowing. In addition, saliva creates a lubricating effect that keeps the inside of our mouths moisturized, enabling our speech to be smooth.

Why Wait to Brush?

It may take 30 to 45 minutes for your saliva to remineralize and restore the enamel to its previous state after you eat. Brushing your teeth too soon after you eat acidic foods can damage your teeth as you brush away your helpful saliva. Let your saliva do its job and restore your teeth for at least 30 minutes after you eat. Instead of brushing after a meal, consider swishing with water to help wash away the acids from your teeth.
