Practices to maintain healthy teeth

Posted on 4/11/2022 by SRD Tuscumbia
Practices to maintain healthy teethTo have healthy teeth, one should brush twice a day, have regular checkups with the dentist, and brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid destroying the enamel; it should be done in circular motions. Remember to brush the tongue. The toothbrush should be changed after every three months. Brushing should be done after every meal as it aids in removing bacteria and plaque, thus keeping the teeth clean. The floss helps remove bacteria and plaque between the teeth where a toothbrush can't reach; it also helps eliminate debris and food particles stuck between the teeth. The flossing should be done gently going up-down motion.

Avoid snapping.

Use of fluoride

Fluoride helps prevent cavities; it also strengthens the enamel and prevents a bad odor from coming from the mouth. If there is no fluoride tooth decay in cleaning the teeth, it is mostly like to occur; fluoride should be used optimally as it can discolor the teeth.

Avoid smoking

Smoking leads to yellowing of the tongue and teeth giving a bad odor. Smokers experience healing slowly when a dental procedure is done compared to non-smokers. Smoking weakens the body's immune system; thus, the body cannot heal tissues, inclusive of the tissues of the mouth.

Limit sugary food and starch and drinking of water

Sugar leads to cavities. The sugar level should be below 10%; starchy food causes decay as they break down the simple sugars that acid-producing bacteria feed on. The acid wears out the enamel, causing cavities. Water helps make saliva; it also aids in breaking down the food and neutralizes the acid in the mouth, reducing the risk of cavities.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash helps reduce acid in the mouth, re-mineralizes the teeth, and brings bacteria into balance. A mouthwash containing chlorhexidine has an antibacterial feature, thus aids in controlling tartar and plaque.

Eat fruits and vegetables that are crunchy and take care of the teeth from injury

Fresh crunchy vegetables and fruits contain more healthy fiber; they also help the gum become stronger. Always use a mouthguard when sports activities and prevent inserting objects in the teeth.
