How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign treatment involves a series of clear plastic aligner trays that are designed to move your teeth to their proper positions. It all begins with a consultation, during which we will be able to determine if you are a suitable candidate for Invisalign. The next step is treatment planning.

The dentist will take an impression of your teeth and gums, usually with digital technology, that will be used to create a 3D model of your mouth. This information will be sent to Invisalign headquarters, where they will use it to fabricate your personalized series of aligner trays. Each tray is designed to apply pressure on your teeth, gently moving them to a slightly straighter position.

The number of trays you receive and the length of your treatment is dictated by the type and severity of your orthodontic problem. You will be asked to wear each tray about 20 to 22 hours a day for two weeks. Once you are finished with a particular tray, you simply move on to the next one in your series.

Invisalign Vs. Traditional Braces

Invisalign is generally used for patients who have mild or moderate crowding or spacing issues. If you suffer from severe crowding, spacing, or malocclusion (misaligned bite) issues, traditional braces may be a more suitable option. Only a dentist will be able to determine which type of treatment is right for you.

Most people are familiar with traditional braces, which are much more obtrusive than clear aligner trays. Braces have even been stigmatized in popular culture. While there is no shame in bettering your oral health and achieving a more beautiful smile, some adults fear that wearing braces may have adverse effects on their personal or professional lives. If this sounds like you, Invisalign may be the answer.

Benefits of Invisalign

The Invisalign system is designed with comfort and convenience in mind. When compared to traditional braces, treatment with Invisalign is practically painless. Traditional braces can be quite uncomfortable after the wire is tightened. The appliance itself can also irritate your inner lips and checks.

Invisalign trays are much more gentle, because the soft, smooth plastic eliminates irritation issues. The trays are also removable, making eating, brushing, and flossing much more convenient. Traditional braces can trap food debris and prevent you from properly cleaning your teeth.

Above all else, most patients find the discreet nature of Invisalign treatment to be the biggest benefit. The trays are fabricated using a special type of clear plastic, which is virtually invisible when placed over the teeth. Most people will not be able to tell you are wearing an appliance unless you point it out.

FAQ's About Invisalign

What is the typical duration for Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign treatment duration varies based on individual cases, typically ranging from 12 to 18 months. Your dentist will provide a more precise timeline during your consultation, depending on your specific orthodontic needs.

Which dental issues can Invisalign address?

Invisalign can correct various dental issues, including crowded teeth, gaps, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites. It is an effective solution for many common alignment problems.

Is Invisalign appropriate for all age groups?

Invisalign is suitable for both teenagers and adults. Invisalign Teen is specifically designed for younger patients, with features to help ensure they follow the treatment plan. Your dentist can determine if Invisalign is right for you or your child.

How frequently should I visit the dentist during Invisalign treatment?

During Invisalign treatment, you should visit your dentist every 6 to 8 weeks. These check-ups allow your dentist to monitor your progress and provide you with the next set of aligners to keep your treatment on track.

Can I eat and drink while wearing Invisalign aligners?

It is recommended to remove Invisalign aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water to prevent staining and damage. Brush your teeth after meals before reinserting the aligners to maintain oral hygiene.

How should I clean my Invisalign aligners?

To clean your Invisalign aligners, rinse them with lukewarm water and gently brush them with a soft toothbrush. Avoid hot water, as it can deform the plastic. Specialized cleaning solutions or crystals can also be used for thorough cleaning.

What should I do if I misplace or break an aligner?

If you lose or break an aligner, contact your dentist immediately. They will advise whether to proceed to the next set of aligners or to use the previous set while a replacement is ordered. Prompt communication is essential to avoid disrupting your treatment.

Can I participate in sports or play musical instruments with Invisalign?

Yes, you can continue playing sports and musical instruments while wearing Invisalign. For contact sports, it’s advisable to remove the aligners and wear a mouthguard. Invisalign aligners are less intrusive than traditional braces, making them suitable for most activities.

Will Invisalign affect my speech?

You may experience slight speech changes, such as a minor lisp, when first wearing Invisalign aligners. However, most patients adjust within a few days, and their speech returns to normal as they get used to the aligners.

Can I smoke while using Invisalign aligners?

Smoking is not recommended while wearing Invisalign aligners, as it can stain the aligners and teeth, and negatively impact oral health. For the best results and to maintain the appearance of your aligners, it’s advisable to avoid smoking during treatment.
