How Does the Remineralization Process Work for Your Teeth?

Posted on 4/10/2023 by SRD Florence
How Does the Remineralization Process Work for Your Teeth?A lot of the foreign particles that enter our mouth are bound to cause harm when left unchecked. This begins with something as normal as food. When we are done eating, there are food particles that have already formed around our teeth. They combine to form a microbial biofilm known as plaque. There are bacteria in the mouth that then work on this plaque breaking it down to form acids. These are the acids that with time erode the tooth enamel causing cavities or tooth decay. When this goes on for a while, it affects the roots and causes tooth loosening and in turn inflamed gums. This can also lead to periodontal disease.

What Is The Process Of Remineralization?

As the plaque is being worked on by acids, there are internal systems that allow the tooth enamel to rebuild and form in keeping up with the damage. This is the remineralization process. It happens through saliva. The minerals of calcium and phosphate also allow to keep the tooth healthy. However, as one grows older and eats more sugars, the minerals are depleted and the tooth enamel cannot reconstruct even after damage.

How Can I Achieve Better Remineralization?

As much as remineralization occurs by itself in your mouth, it is important to aid in the process if you want better results. It is important to brush your teeth and floss daily as this keeps away bacteria from your mouth. Use a toothpaste that has fluoride. You should also eat more natural foods and avoid sugary foods as these only damage your teeth.

We recommend cleaning your teeth at least once every three months professionally. Visit us today and get more information on the process of remineralization and learn how to maintain strong teeth.
