Dental Exam
Muscle Shoals, AL

Woman smiling with perfect teethAt Singing River Dentistry, we want to make sure your teeth and gums stay healthy and clean, which is why we strongly recommend all of our patients come to us for regularly scheduled dental exams. By visiting us regularly, we can quickly spot and fix issues at their earliest stages and make sure your teeth are protected from future decay.

It's much easier, for example, to fill in a cavity than it is to perform a full root canal. The same goes for getting a regular cleaning as opposed to having to undergo a lengthy gum-scaling procedure.

That is why regular exams are important. Often, we can identify issues before they even start causing you pain.

The Keys to a Good Dental Exam

Every dental exam begins with a thorough look at your teeth and gums. We use this examination to look for instances of tooth decay, gum disease and a whole host of other issues.

We also use this time to talk with you about how you take care of your teeth at home. Are you brushing regularly? Do you floss? Do you use mouthwash?

This is also a good time to talk about any medications you are taking or if you have any overall health issues. Even if it is not related to your mouth, it may still be important. As an example, certain types of diabetes may impact your overall gum health.

Depending on what was done at your last visit, we may take x-ray images of your teeth. The images we get from this procedure allow us to see beneath the surface and spot issues like developing cavities or gum disease.

Dental x-rays are quick and painless procedures, but if you have concerns, please let us know ahead of time so we can make accommodations for your needs. Next is typically a full cleaning of your teeth and gums. This professional cleaning removes all the built-up plaque and tartar and helps protect your teeth until your next visit.

Depending on your long-term treatment plan, we may also take an impression of your teeth. These impressions help us see if there are any developing issues such as a misaligned or uneven bite and allows us to have a complete record of your teeth’s appearance in case you ever need a tooth replaced or fixed. If you need partial dentures or a crown, dental impressions are also very helpful.

What Happens After the Exam

Now that we have done a full examination, we can make a long-term plan to maintain your dental health. Depending on what we find, we may need to schedule another appointment to address issues like cavities or root canals. We also will discuss how you should best care for your teeth and gums at home and what preventative cleaning habits you should follow to avoid having to deal with any serious issues in the future.
