Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal maintenance is a common procedure we offer at Singing River Dentistry for our patients who have recently undergone some type of periodontal work. It involves performing a thorough cleaning that is specifically designed to clean and protect the gums and stop any further development of periodontal disease.

Maintaining After a Periodontal Procedure

As the name implies, periodontal maintenance is an important part of the post-periodontal-procedure care plan. If you have recently had periodontal surgery or had a gum scaling procedure, you will be scheduled to come in for regular periodontal maintenance visits in the future where the dentist will perform specific gum cleaning techniques.

During a periodontal maintenance visit, the dentist will perform a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums and also measure the size of the pockets along the gumline. These measurements are taken to see if they are growing over time, which could indicate the need for further periodontal treatment.

This type of visit may not seem all that different than coming in for a regular dental cleaning, but it is specifically targeted toward promoting good gum health and warding off any developing gum disease. During a periodontal maintenance visit, the dentist will remove the plaque and tartar buildup on the surface of your teeth, flush out the deep pockets that formed around the gumline and remove the bacteria, plaque or tartar from the surface of the root.

All this work needs to be done regularly because those who have dealt with gum disease in the past are more susceptible to getting gum disease in the future.

Creating a Post-Periodontal-Procedure Care Plan

Following your periodontal procedure, you and your dentist will discuss your future care schedule. It typically will involve coming into the office once every three months for a periodontal maintenance visit.

While it may seem excessive, it is vital we keep your gums cleaned during this important healing time. We find that it only takes three months for damaging bacteria to develop underneath the gumline in spaces where regular brushing and flossing cannot reach. Additionally, by coming into the office more frequently, we are better able to track your gums healing progress and spot any signs of infection or disease much earlier.

It is important to note that even though you may be coming into our office more frequently under this plan, you cannot forego taking care of your teeth and gums at home. It is more important now than ever, to make sure you are following your post-procedure care plan to keep your teeth and gums cleaned at home.
