How Implants Prevent Bone Loss
Muscle Shoals, AL

Woman looking at her smile in a mirror after dental implant treatment at Singing River Dentistry.Restoring missing teeth with dental implants not only improves your bite, it also prevents bone loss. Your jawbone plays an important role in providing structure to your face, and we want to support it from collapse following tooth loss. Rebuilding the bone structure with implants will help you chew better, speak better, and enhance your appearance. Our team at Singing River Dentistry can help.

Traditional restorations using prosthetic devices such as a dental crown, bridge or denture, provides multiple benefits to your oral health, but they do not take your jawbone into consideration. The surgical placement of dental implants combine the benefit of prosthetics while also rebuilding and providing added strength to your jaw. With dental implants, we are not only restoring, but rebuilding missing teeth from the base.

When a tooth is lost, the jaw structure is compromised. Our jawbone, like all of our bones, requires the stimulation of movement to stay healthy. Bone is continuously growing and renewing, so when an area of bone is no longer being used, our body naturally stops sending the materials needed to keep that bone healthy as a way to preserve resources. This pull back of resources is known as atrophy, and it is seen through shrinkage of the bone. You may spy a small sampling of this effect following the removal of a cast on an arm or leg. Part of the surgical process of placing an implant is the bulking up of bone and then reestablishing the connection between the tooth and bone to restore that stimulation.

The Benefits of Dental Implants and our Bone

As we use our teeth throughout the day, we are passing the energy through the root and to the bone, stimulating the bone. When a tooth is lost, the root is also lost. If you choose to replace the tooth but not replace the root, as traditional methods work, a tooth may be present but the bone is not receiving the stimulation it needs to stay robust.

Most implant procedures begin with examining the bone. We determine if it is healthy, or if it would benefit from a bone graft. A bone graft is a simple procedure. Using a local anesthetic, we open the tissue to expose the bone and then place a small amount of bone material. The tissue is then closed and we send the patient home for a healing period. Once we have established new bone growth, we can then proceed.

On the day of your implant procedure we begin with ensuring your comfort. We then open the tissue once again and use a specialized drill to create space in the bone for the implant. The implant is then sunk into the bone and the tissue is closed. Over the next several months the bone will continue to grow as it heals and grows up and around the threads of the implant fusing the bone and implant firmly together. We can then secure a dental prosthetic to this newly created root system where your new tooth can once again pass energy through the root to the bone.
