How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign treatment involves a series of clear plastic aligner trays that are designed to move your teeth to their proper positions. It all begins with a consultation, during which we will be able to determine if you are a suitable candidate for Invisalign. The next step is treatment planning.

One of our dentists will take an impression of your teeth and gums, usually with digital technology, that will be used to create a 3D model of your mouth. This information will be sent to Invisalign headquarters, where they will use it to fabricate your personalized series of aligner trays. Each tray is designed to apply pressure on your teeth, gently moving them to a slightly straighter position.

The number of trays you receive and the length of your treatment is dictated by the type and severity of your orthodontic problem. You will be asked to wear each tray about 20 to 22 hours a day for two weeks. Once you are finished with a particular tray, you simply move on to the next one in your series.

Invisalign Vs. Traditional Braces

Invisalign is generally used for patients who have mild or moderate crowding or spacing issues. If you suffer from severe crowding, spacing, or malocclusion (misaligned bite) issues, traditional braces may be a more suitable option. Only a dentist or orthodontist will be able to determine which type of treatment is right for you.

Most people are familiar with traditional braces, which are much more obtrusive than clear aligner trays. Braces have even been stigmatized in popular culture. While there is no shame in bettering your oral health and achieving a more beautiful smile, some adults fear that wearing braces may have adverse effects on their personal or professional lives. If this sounds like you, Invisalign may be the answer.

Benefits of Invisalign

The Invisalign system is designed with comfort and convenience in mind. When compared to traditional braces, treatment with Invisalign is practically painless. Traditional braces can be quite uncomfortable after the wire is tightened. The appliance itself can also irritate your inner lips and checks.

Invisalign trays are much more gentle, because the soft, smooth plastic eliminates irritation issues. The trays are also removable, making eating, brushing, and flossing much more convenient. Traditional braces can trap food debris and prevent you from properly cleaning your teeth.

Above all else, most patients find the discreet nature of Invisalign treatment to be the biggest benefit. The trays are fabricated using a special type of clear plastic, which is virtually invisible when placed over the teeth. Most people will not be able to tell you are wearing an appliance unless you point it out.

FAQ's About Invisalign

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

The duration of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case. On average, treatment can take anywhere from 12 to 18 months. Your dentist will provide a more accurate timeline based on your specific needs.

What issues can Invisalign correct?

Invisalign can effectively correct a variety of dental issues, including overcrowded teeth, gaps between teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites. It is a versatile solution for many common orthodontic problems.

Is Invisalign suitable for all ages?

Invisalign is suitable for both teens and adults. For teenagers, Invisalign offers a special line called Invisalign Teen, which includes features to help ensure compliance. Your dentist can determine if Invisalign is the right treatment for you or your child.

How often do I need to visit the dentist during Invisalign treatment?

During Invisalign treatment, you will typically need to visit your dentist every 6 to 8 weeks. These appointments allow your dentist to monitor your progress and provide you with your next set of aligners.

Can I eat and drink with Invisalign aligners?

You should remove your Invisalign aligners when eating or drinking anything other than water. This helps prevent staining and damage to the aligners. After eating, brush your teeth before reinserting the aligners to maintain good oral hygiene.

How do I clean my Invisalign aligners?

To clean your Invisalign aligners, rinse them with lukewarm water and brush them gently with a soft toothbrush. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic. Specialized cleaning crystals or solutions are also available for a more thorough cleaning.

What happens if I lose or break an aligner?

If you lose or break an aligner, contact your dentist immediately. They will advise whether to move on to the next set of aligners or use the previous set while a replacement is ordered. Timely communication is essential to ensure your treatment stays on track.

Can I play sports or musical instruments with Invisalign?

Yes, you can play sports and musical instruments while wearing Invisalign. For contact sports, it's recommended to remove the aligners and wear a protective mouthguard. Invisalign aligners are less likely to interfere with musical instruments compared to traditional braces.

Will wearing Invisalign affect my speech?

Wearing Invisalign aligners may cause slight speech changes, such as a minor lisp, when you first start using them. However, most patients adjust within a few days to a week, and their speech returns to normal.

Can I smoke while wearing Invisalign aligners?

It is not recommended to smoke while wearing Invisalign aligners, as smoking can stain the aligners and teeth. Additionally, smoking can negatively affect your oral health and the overall success of your treatment.
