What Is a Dental Crown?
Muscle Shoals, AL

Rendering of jaw with dental crown at Singing River Dentistry. When someone needs to have a tooth capped to keep it strong and healthy, one of the most effective options we have here at Singing River Dentistry is to use dental crowns.

There are several types of crowns, and several types of materials that a crown can be made of.

It is best for us to look at what is going on in your mouth and figure out what type of crown will best suit your needs. Then, we will discuss our opinions with you and work with you to figure out the best option to treat your oral issue so you can go back to living your life like normal.

Understanding Why We Use Dental Crowns

There are certain circumstances that harm the integrity of a tooth. While the enamel on your teeth is incredibly strong and durable, there are times where it gets weaker.

This can be due to a procedure you have done, such as a root canal, or it can be due to outside problems like a cavity or acid erosion. When this is the case, we want to go through and add as much strength to your tooth as possible.

To attain that type of strength, we often use caps, also known as traditional dental crowns.

We put a dental crown over the top of a tooth so that it is what you see and what you chew on. It protects the weaker tooth beneath it, so you still have your original tooth in place. That way, when you smile, your smile looks like it always did, and when you chew, your weaker tooth is not affected.

How to Place Normal Dental Crowns

When your tooth needs a crown, we have to make sure what is left of the tooth is as healthy as possible.

From there, we trim down a tiny portion of the tooth so that the crown can sit on top without being out of place.

Then, we cement the cap in place, and once it sits just right with your bite alignment, we let it cure.

Dental crowns can last for years if you take care of them properly, which is always the goal.

You can get a dental crown in several materials, but the two most popular are metal and porcelain. The porcelain crown shines and mimics the look of your natural tooth, allowing it to be difficult for anyone outside of a dental professional like us to even know it is there.
