How Do I Begin a Customized Treatment Plan?

Dental Consultations

Any customized dental services must begin with a dental consultation. Dental consultations are a time you can sit down with our dentist to discuss your dental goals. Sometimes, you may need more than one dental consultation before your customized plan can begin, especially if you are new to our practice.

Before you begin your consultation with our dentist, you may want to take some time to write down your dental goals and questions. Then, you will be ready to meet.

Dental Cleanings and Dental Exams

At some point during the initial process of a customized treatment plan, you will need to have a dental exam. Twice a year, you visit the dental office for a dental cleaning of your teeth and gums. The dentist then examines your teeth, gums, and jaw structure. You may also get digital X-rays as part of your exam. It is important that our dentist has the most accurate information on your dental health before you can discuss dental procedures.

Your Customized Dental Treatment Plan

Now that our dentist has all of the necessary information, it is time to discuss where to begin with your dental treatment plan. Usually, you and the dentist will map out a timeline for getting your teeth and gums the way you want them. Some procedures may need to be done first before you can move on to the next stage of your dental plan.

At the end of this visit, you should have a plan with a timeline, and you can begin to change your oral health.

What Are Some Examples of a Customized Dental Treatment Plan?

You do not have to be an adult to have a customized treatment plan. In fact, children and adolescents often have customized plans because they need dental adjustments while their mouths are changing and their permanent teeth are erupting.

Pediatric Dental Treatment Plan

There are several examples of treatment plans your child may need as they grow into their permanent teeth. If your child sucked on their thumb or their pacifier past the age of four or five, they may have some issues with their bite and tooth placement. For example, their top jaw may be smaller and narrower than their bottom jaw.

After a dental cleaning and X-rays, you and your child may need to sit down with our dentist to discuss options. Usually, a child with a smaller upper jaw has an underbite that will need to be corrected, so the first step in the treatment plan may be to use expanders to enlarge the upper jaw over a couple of years.

Once their permanent teeth come in, it may be time to treat any remaining bite issues, either with braces or clear aligners. Then, your child may need to have their teeth whitened and dental bonding applied to any lingering spaces in between their teeth. This type of dental plan could take several years to complete.

Adult Dental Treatment Plans

Adults can have complicated dental treatment plans depending on their goals. Often, these dental treatment plans occur when there are orthodontic goals, cosmetic dental goals, or restorative goals.

For example, if you did not have orthodontics as a teenager, you may have lingering issues with your bite. Your teeth may be misaligned or poorly spaced, or they could be overcrowded. Your dental plan may need to begin with correcting your bite issues or malocclusion through braces or clear aligners.

Once your bite is corrected, you may need further treatment to address your teeth themselves. If you have a canine tooth that is larger on one side of your jaw than the other, you may need to have a cosmetic fix done, such as dental bonding or a dental crown.

Also, customized dental treatment plans may be necessary for adults with several tooth issues that need correcting. If you have multiple issues with your teeth, such as discolored teeth, broken or cracked teeth, or misshapen teeth, you may want to opt to have dental veneers done as part of your plan.

Repairing Teeth

You could also opt to fix your broken, cracked, or misshapen teeth with dental bonding or dental crowns. If you have a tooth that is severely cracked or broken, it may be part of your dental plan to extract the damaged tooth and use a dental implant instead. Finally, our dentist can whiten your teeth so that you can present a brilliant white smile to the world.

Replacing Missing Teeth

Restorative dental plans may include beginning a treatment plan for your missing teeth as well. If you have lost several teeth, you may need a combination of treatments to restore your dental health. First, you may need to have any injured teeth removed. Then, you may be able to have your missing teeth replaced with a type of dental implant, such as an implant-supported bridge.

You will need to have dental posts inserted into your jawbone to support an implant, so it will take several months for this plan to be completed. However, while you are waiting for your gums and jawbone to heal, our dentist may work on fixing your natural teeth with crowns or bridges so that by the time you finish the dental implant procedure, your mouth will look like new.
